Nearly New Sale

Huge, huge thanks need to go to all the sellers, the volunteers andto  everyone who came along to buy at yesterday’s Nearly New Sale. A special thank you must also go to Rebecca Seal, who organises the sales, does all the running around and stresses ALOT about making the sales a success.

The final count has been done and the sale raised £573.55 for the Children’s Heart Unit at The Freeman Hospital. This money will go towards the purchase of life-saving equipment needed by the unit to save children’s lives.

The Network supports the sales because the Children’s Heart Unit is special for a few of us – we know babies who are alive because of its work and the staff make a huge difference to parents who need emotional support as well as information and reassurance.

About the Children’s Heart Unit

The Children’s Heart Unit at the Freeman Hospital is one of only two centres in the UK offering paediatric heart transplant and bridge to transplant, with transplant numbers increasing to the point where the unit now provides almost HALF of the UK’s paediatric transplants. They also have the expertise and support systems through their transplant service to allow them to undertake high-risk surgery. The Children’s Heart Unit is also the only service providing before birth care with seamless transition to adulthood.

Providing world class care, the unit is structured to deliver the best possible results for critically ill babies, children and young people. The service has been developed and planned in a co-ordinated manner by the dedicated team, providing a range of specialist procedures which ensure that the children’s heart surgery service is the best that it can be.

The population catchment is approximately 3 million with services including:

- Fetal Medicine
- Paediatric Cardiology
- Paediatric Intensive Care
- ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation)
- Cardiac Surgery including heart and lung transplantation & bridge to transplant

Even children with the most complicated heart defects are now expected to survive, and the Freeman Hospital provides all aspects of care related to this. Taking care of babies in the womb is also undertaken by the team, who give valuable advice and support, guiding families through this daunting experience.

The Children’s Heart Unit have a long standing national and international reputation in electrophysiology which extends to paediatrics, which only a few centres can provide. This unit is at the forefront of developments in electrophysiology and rhythm disorders of the heart.

The unit has embraced the challenges national cases present, and the range of devices and therapies that can be offered has changed dramatically over the last five years. They work closely with other units to provide services and ensure that patients receive joined up care, regardless of where they live. Although the work is intensive and requires expertise at many levels, it has made a positive impact on the lives of many patients from both the North East and throughout the UK and Ireland.

The next Nearly New Sale is on February 24th (10-12) at The Linskill Centre in North Shields.

I would like to do a massive shout out to Ivan and Nadine, who have now raised £200,000 for the Children’s Heart Unit at The Freeman Hospital. Through blood, sweat and tears they have run marathons, completed fantastic C2C challenges, and organised annual fundraising balls. The last test of endurance by Ivan was running 100 miles in 24 hours in April -  a truly amazing challenge.

Ivan and Nadine, along with some pretty fantastic friends and family, do this to say thank you to the unit and the staff who saved their son’s life. In Ivan’s words: “As many will be aware, the initial idea to raise money for CHUF came when we were sat in PICU (Paediatric Intensive Care Unit) watching our 16 week old son Sebastian cling onto life by a thread. As he slowly recovered and grew stronger we felt an overwhelming urge to thank people; his surgeon Mr Asif Hasan, the anaesthetist Dr Simon Haynes, his Cardiologist Dr Richard Kirk and every single nurse working their back sides off, in the hardest medical environment imaginable. The problem is these people ‘just’ see their work as normal…!!! There is also only so many times you can hug someone before they think you’re weird. When we heard about CHUF we both knew what to do and our journey began.”

It is an amazing unit, and anyone who has ever had to be there with their child will feel the same. Almost five years ago me and my husband sat there with our newborn son, who needed life-saving heart surgery. Jamie’s nurse made sure that, despite all the wires, we felt connected to our boy – we couldn’t cuddle him but we stroked him and washed him and spoke to him and kissed him. The staff were honest and sensitive with us every step of the way, even when it was clear that he couldn’t be saved. The surgical team battled for 12 hours to save our son, Jamie’s nurse sat with us and kept us informed, and she was the one who brought in our beautiful son to us after he had died. The staff helped us so much and we have many many fond memories because of them and they made the hardest time of our lives slightly easier to bear.

I am in awe of Ivan and Nadine and I will support them and their passion to raise money for the Children’s Heart Unit for as long as they continue to do it.
